Puka: This Summer’s Top Mountain Destination - Into Albania

Puka: This Summer’s Top Mountain Destination

The tranquil northern city, an unlikely tourism contender, has been transformed into one of the hottest sports for outdoor lovers, mountain climbers and seekers of new frontiers.

This season, Puka is preparing to welcome a great number of vacationers who like an invigorating atmosphere and grand vistas. With its famous caves, epic mountains and rugged trails, hospitable guesthouses and amazing traditional food, fresh water and crisp air, it is no wonder that travelers are looking to the northeastern alpine town this summer.

Puka has always been a coveted destination because of its clean, fresh, healthy air and water but recent development has made it into a veritable touristic destination. The virtually untouched alpine town has retained many genuine aspects of its culture, landscape and cuisine. Needless to mention that, after months of lockdown, this summer people will be looking for expansive spaces which Puka can provide, in ample quantities.

Ready for summer

Last summer, Puka welcomed 6000 local and international tourists, making it one of the most visited places north of the country. This summer, Puka will top the lists of local summer destinations for mountain climbers and lovers of alpine tourism.

Remote and isolated due to its harsh climate, and especially during the Communist period in the country, Puka has undergone a transformation that has revived and refreshed its traditions and brought the town into the present. Puka’s guesthouses, historically cozy and welcoming, offer even better services now. The town’s infrastructure, which previously rendered the town inaccessible, has been developed and greatly improved. A great part of the town has undergone restoration, including old buildings and the town’s great park.

One of the most important recent events has been the establishment of the Center of Tourism and Rural Development. This center not only trains professional tour guides, to showcase and help the region’s beautiful landscape become more accessible, but supports touristic services in the area. 10 new families will open their recently transformed guesthouses to tourists this summer.

Puka has become Albania’s quintessential alpine town. With its famous Puka Beer, we can see it hosting the best Oktoberfest celebrations! Although several of the capital’s bars and restaurants serve Puka beer, it is a completely different experience to enjoy the delicious beer in its native habitat.
