If you love outdoor activities and want to spend a beach day in Albania that is out of ordinary, Gjipe is the perfect place for you.
Gjipe Beach is located between Dhërmi and Vuno in southern Albania. While quite small in size, the beauty of this beach is spectacular due its crystal-clear blue waters, smooth rocks and alcove caves. You can reach this gem of the Albanian Riviera in myriad ways, depending on how adventurous you are. Indeed, you have many options for outdoor activities around this beach. Below, a list of the best ones to do, ranked from easiest to the most challenging.
The trip to Gjipe can be completed within the day but we recommend camping here for at least one night. If you enjoy being outdoors, the Gjipe Eco Campground is a pretty perfect spot! It is located behind the beach, in a beautiful field of olive groves. Another alternative is to bring your own tent and camp by the beach. The latter may be worth it only for the view, as what you see beyond the open door of your tent can be wonderful! In the total darkness of the night and away from any lights, at Gjipe you can enjoy sights of a sky full of stars and even spot the Milky Way.
Hiking is a great way of truly exploring the Albanian coastline and the road to Gjipe offers one of the best opportunities to do so. The two most popular trails heading to Gjipe are Jal – Gjipe and Vuno – Gjipe. We recommend the first one as it is the best way to experience the sheer beauty of the Albanian Riviera. However, each trail requires the same exact amount of time to complete – approximately 90 minutes – so the choice is up to you!
Gjipe Beach offers some of the best climbing opportunities in Albania. The available routes are well-categorized according to their difficulty, so there are suitable ones for novice climbers as well as professionals. Albania Adventure offers great day trips across southern Albania which include climbing in Gjipe. You can reach Gjipe from Jal Bay by sea kayak or hiking.
Canyoning, the most challenging of the suggested activities, mixes adrenaline and natural beauty in equal measure. Keep in mind that this activity requires a certain level of physical fitness. The total walking time is around 3 hours and there are five rope descents from altitudes ranging from 6 to 15 meters. You can undertake this adventure only with professional guides like Albania Adventure but it is well-worth your time and energy!
