New Trail Markers in Lezha: Hiking Your Way Through Nature, Culture and History

People dream of destinations like this in 2020! The little explored region of Lezha is undergoing a few small but meaningful changes that will render this culturally-rich and spectacularly beautiful destination more accessible than ever.

An especially gorgeous part of Lezha has seen new signs put up in order to welcome mountain explorers this summer. The specific trail begins on the road that takes you to the famous Rana e Hedhun beach and continues toward Rrenc Mountain. In addition to the fresh air and amazing vistas, this once-inhabited area has plenty of cultural and historical gems hiding around each corner.

The new markers on the whopping 16-km trail takes explorers through gorgeous mountainous terrain as well as to fascinating cultural objects. One of the great things along this trail is the variety of wonderful healing and medicinal plants. On your way, you could collect bunches of sage as well as wild rose, pear or berries, depending on the season.

You will notice abandoned buildings, some of which are in the process of becoming new guesthouses. The old building of the village school is a fascinating artefact of life in Rrenc, before it was abandoned in 1940.

A trail rich in beauty and history

The first historical object you will encounter along the trail is the Church of St. Nicholas. Surrounded by an awe-inspiring forest of tall oaks, the cult object, of more than 6 centuries, is in good condition and has retained much its original grandeur. Moving on, we have the Illyrian Dalmatian cemeteries. Locals call these ancient monuments of extraordinary value, mogila. Suprisingly, these mounds are very little explored, even though they date back to more than 3,500 years ago. The ruins of St. Peter’s Church, the house of famous anti-Communist clergyman Father Zef Pllumi, the many typical houses of the area, as well as the caves and wells are some of the sites you can expect along this rich trail.

Along the way, you will have the pleasure of meeting locals who work the land and produce a variety of wonderful local fare. You will relax in the meadows, and traverse a ridge beneath which lies the popular Rana e Hedhun beach. All this you will be able to do without the help of a guide!  The new trail is marked on both road signage and rock markings. But, don’t forget the friendly locals. With their array of historical tales and legends about the area, they are the best guides you could ask for.

If interested in further discovering this little explored region, keep posted! This is only one of many new improvements to come during the summer of 2020.
