The beautiful Lezha, along with its surroundings, is becoming a must-visit spot. In the historically, culturally, and naturally rich area, the visitor will find a place of tradition where the ancient spirit of hospitality still reigns.
Ungrej is a relatively little-known village in Lezha that invites further exploration. Already a great contender for mountain tourism, Ungrej also combines the cultural and historical with its beautiful landscape. The village is situated in a flat area, crossed by several mountain streams, including the eponymous Ungrej stream.
The trip from the coast of Shëngjin to Ungrej lasts approximately 50 minutes, moving from a warm area to a cooler and more refreshing climate. The road passes through the village of Kallmet, another important destination for cultural tourism.
The winding road leading to the Kreshta Peak cannot be left unmentioned, as the top of the ridge offers a view of Kallmet and the plains of Zadrima. While before the road was unmarked, now, there are signs that direct the visitor towards the paths and spots of interest. In addition, there is plenty of information along the way regarding the historical and cultural destination.
A chestnut forest is located on the right side of the road leading to the village, on a slope. In the vicinity of the Kalura area an impressive bush plant, called busus sempers virens, can be found. Although it is a shrub, its dense, yellowish-white wood is used for artistic woodwork, pipes, pipettes, hair combs, kitchen spoons, spindles, and so on. The valley also favors the growth of walnut and hazelnut wood. Another special plant native to Ungrej is called Hyssopus Officinalis, a medicinal plant used to produce honey and serves medicinal purposes.
The area’s locals are starting to return according to Gjergj Figuri, Head of Tourism at the Lezha Municipality. Many are returning from the cities while many others from abroad, giving Ungrej both a local and international feel that adds to its great atmosphere. Another element that gives the village a unique feel are the traditional tower-like houses. Simply fascinating, they perfectly adorn the entire journey through this mountainous touristic area.
